OWLAG achieves 100% Pass Rate Again

We, at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) are absolutely delighted to announce that once again, we achieved 100% Pass and a 100% Bachelor’s Degree Pass rate. This means that the entire cohort of the Class of 2019, the O’ Caladrius can enroll for degree studies at university.

In 2019, 59 OWLAG students wrote the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) National Senior Certificate examinations and achieved 197 distinctions in total, 46 more distinctions as compared to last year. There were also many who achieved in the 70% range.

We also wish to congratulate our Top Learners, Tshwanelo Mafatle, Noluthando Dlamini, Liya Vally and Nkosiphile Mavundla.

In particular, we congratulate three of our students who performed extremely well and achieved 6 distinctions.

  1. Tshwanelo Mafatle who achieved 6 distinctions in the 7 subjects she wrote. Her subjects include Sesotho FAL (89%); Economics (86%); Accounting (91%); Life Orientation (88%); Mathematics (93%) and Physical Sciences (87%).
  2. Khwezi Bhekwa – achieved distinctions in the following subjects: English (81%), Mathematical Literacy (87%), IsiZulu (92%), Life Orientation (88%), Business Studies (82%) and Dramatic Arts (84%).
  3. Tshepang Mpinga – English (81%), Mathematics (80%), Sesotho FAL (87%), Life Orientation (85%),
    Business Studies (85%) and Life Sciences (81%).

We are also very proud of Nkosiphile Mavunda who achieved in the top 1% in Mathematical Literacy, in South Africa.

Further notable achievements include the following:

  • 28 0ut of 30 of our learners achieved distinctions in Mathematical Literacy.
  • As a school that prides itself with promoting languages, we are extra proud that in IsiZulu we received 24 out of 24 distinctions.
  • 2 out of our 2 Learners achieved distinctions in Dance Studies,
  • 58 out of 59 Learners achieved distinctions in Life Orientation.

A further 21 students obtained 3 distinctions each and 13 students obtained 2 distinctions each. We are also proud of the 2 students who obtained 1 distinction each.

OWLAG prides itself with producing an excellent well rounded curriculum. To that effect, we are happy to announce that our girls achieved A’s in Dance Studies and Dramatic Arts.

Overall OWLAG Statistics:

59 Candidates wrote the examinations
59 Passed (100%).
59 achieved a Bachelor’s Degree pass (100%).

59 students wrote a total of 417 subjects among them and achieved the following outstanding results:

  • All subjects achieved distinctions.
  • There were 197 subject “outstanding achievements” (Level 7/distinctions/80%+) i.e. 47.24% of subjects written resulted in level 7 achievements – distinctions.
  • There were 130 subject “meritorious achievements” (Level 6/70 – 79%) i.e. 31.18% of subjects written resulted in level 6 achievements.
  • There were 65 subject “substantial achievements” (Level 5/60 – 69%) i.e. 15.59% of subjects resulted in level 5 achievements.
  • A total of 392 (94%) of all the subjects written produced results better than 60%.
  • OWLAG achieved higher than the national IEB averages in 18 out of 19 subjects (excluding Life Orientation) in their exam IEB average.
  • 59 out of 59 students (100%) achieved a subject distinction in 1 or more subjects.

Strengths of the OWLAG Achievements are noted as follows:

  • 18 out of 19 subjects (excluding Life Orientation) achieved averages above the national IEB average.
  • 8 subjects achieved an average of 80% or above
  • 6 subjects achieved an average of 70% or above
  • 5 subjects achieved an average of 60% or above

IEB National Statistics:

11 678 full time candidates representing 227 schools wrote the 2019 IEB NSC Examination.
89.51% achieved a Bachelor’s Degree pass.

We are extremely proud of all our girls. Many, if not all of them, overcame significant challenges over the last five years and have come up on top. They not only leave academically successful, but they also leave resilient, courageous and tenacious. We wish them well for their future.
