Organizational Description

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (The Academy) is a world-class educational platform for girls which is aimed at nurturing a new generation of dynamic women leaders. This residential boarding school is situated in Meyerton, Gauteng Province with just over 300 students enrolled in Grades 8 -12. Grade 12. Students write the Independent Examination Board (I.E.B.) NSC Examination.

Job Purpose

  • To ensure that the resourcing and development of the Library Service are commensurate with the Academy’s outstanding academic excellence.
  • To work in collaboration with all staff to lead a learning community by promoting lifelong learning and the inclusion of Information Literacy across the Academy.
  • To promote the love of reading and the use of information resources to maximise both the students and staff academic potential.

Minimum academic requirements & experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Librarianship and/or Information Science or an equivalent Library qualification;
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Education or an equivalent professional teaching qualification;
  • 3 – 5 years experience as a Librarian;
  • Experience in working on various library/database software programmes;
  • Proven experience in cataloguing and classification of library resources;
  • Extensive knowledge of a relevant library system;
  • Proven experience of working in a digital library is required.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • B Hons in Librarianship and/or Information Science or Education;
  • School library experience;
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Teacher;
  • SACE registration;
  • Proven Follett experience.
  • A proven dynamic and innovative approach to embedding a Library in the ongoing academic momentum of a school/educational institute.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage, plan and monitor the operational day-to-day of the Library;
  • Coordinate and oversee the development, review, and the monitoring of the Library strategy, policies, and procedures;
  • Manage various digital reading and information literacy programmes;
  • Plan and coordinate information literacy and reading awareness events;
  • Source and distribute the news that is age-appropriate and relevant to learning and development;
  • Support and assist students and staff in the use of the library and its resources;
  • Provide high-quality professional research and information service and support to students;
  • Ensure adherence to the Library rules and maintain a pleasant, safe and conducive environment to research and study in;
  • Facilitate the development of digitally curated and preserved materials;
  • Train, mentor, and coach Library staff and Student Assistants so that they can continuously provide excellent service to the users;
  • Maintain and/or revise material based on research and/or utilization – keep up to date with new research, trends, information, and teaching methodology;
  • Perform any other duties as requested from time to time.
  • Embed the library within the educational programme of the school to provide support for the implementation of the strategic vision of the Academy.
