Organizational Description

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (The Academy) is a world-class educational platform for girls which is aimed at nurturing a new generation of dynamic women leaders. This residential boarding school is situated in Meyerton, Gauteng Province with just over 300 students enrolled in Grades 8 -12. Grade 12. Students write the Independent Examination Board (I.E.B.) NSC Examination.

Minimum academic requirements & experience

  • Matric;
  • A 3-year National Diploma or Degree in Commerce, majoring in accounting or financial management;
  • A minimum of five to seven years experience in Accounting administration, recording, financial reporting, and procurement;
  • Experience in a learning environment will be an added advantage;
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification will serve as an added advantage.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist the Finance Manager in the execution of the Finance strategy to ensure the realization of the Academy’s vision;
  • Assist the Finance Manager in identifying future Finance operational needs and in developing strategies for these,
  • Contribute to the development and periodic review of Finance policies and procedures;
  • With guidance and supervision from the Finance Manager, assist in the collation and preparation of the Academy’s budget;
  • Monitor the Academy’s budget, identifying problems/significant variations and initiate appropriate action under the FM’s guidance;
  • On a monthly basis, review expenditure reports, detect misallocation, and prepare documentation for re-allocations;
  • Investigate and report on significant budgetary variances, identifying any remedial action that needs to be taken;
  • Distribute monthly general ledgers to the Heads of Departments and managers and resolve queries their queries;
  • Work closely with the outsourced service provider (accounting services) to resolve queries, and provide information and direction.
  • Prepare and submit annual reporting requirements for NPOs to the Department of Social Development;
  • Prepare and submit annual subsidy applications to the Gauteng Department of Education,
  • Prepare any other regulatory compliance documentation as and when it is required,
  • Support the Academy by ensuring that the best value for money is achieved from all procurement i.e. getting what is required in the correct quantity, quality, time, and best price);
  • Oversee the process of obtaining quotations and POs and provide guidance to the Finance Administrator, in line with the Academy’s Procurement Policy;
  • Ensure that only procurement that is within budget or that has appropriate deviation is processed;
  • Share financial information of all CAPEX procurement with the Fixed Asset Controller;
  • Ensure that invoices are accurate and VAT compliant before approving for payment (approval to be in line with the authorization levels as prescribed);
  • Maintain proper records to support the goal of completeness of financial records;
  • Provide guidance to the Finance Administrator with regard to the resolution of all financial and procurement queries and compliance with policies and processes;
  • Administer students’ pocket money (cash and o’ Bucks);
  • Ensure up-to-date record of recoveries from students and communicate deductions;
  • Prepare Annual Financial Statements on Caseware for review by the Finance Manager;
  • Support the Finance Manager and liaise with external auditors in compiling and submitting information and clearing audit queries during the year-end audit;
  • Liaise with the Fixed Asset Controller and other relevant Heads of Departments during stock/asset counts to ensure an accurate reflection of assets in the financial statements;
  • Adherence and compliance with all the Academy’s policies and procedures;
  • Act as the Finance Manager’s 2IC in his/her absence, within the communicated scope.
