Organizational Description

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (The Academy) is a world-class educational platform for girls which is aimed at nurturing a new generation of dynamic women leaders. This residential boarding school is situated in Meyerton, Gauteng Province with just over 300 students enrolled in Grades 8 -12. Grade 12. Students write the Independent Examination Board (I.E.B.) NSC Examination.

Job Purpose

  • Provide pastoral care leadership and the maintenance of the Residence environment conducive to positive student life and student development in Residence.
  • Provide supervision and support to the Residences staff on all operational issues including supervision of the Uniform Store and the Tuckshop.
  • Promote and provide general progress and well-being of individual and group learners so that through the process of care and support they will reach their potential in terms of academic, spiritual, social and emotional development.
  • Oversight of weekend activities and any student events.
  • Aid in the management of the leadership curriculum and be part of leadership innovation and implementation at OWLAG.

Minimum academic requirements & experience

The requirements are as follows:

  1. A relevant 4 year qualification in Teaching, Psychology, Social Work, Child Care or in any other relevant field.
  2. Registration with a relevant professional body, if applicable.
  3. A minimum of three years’ student boarding management/leadership experience or a minimum of three years’ managing and leading people experience.
  4. Proven record in working with teenagers, and or youth.
  5. An understanding and exposure in budgeting and financial forecast.
  6. Exposure in strategic work and report writing.

The following will serve as added advantage:

  1.  A relevant postgraduate degree.
  2. More than three years’ student boarding management/leadership experience or more than three years’ managing and leading people experience.

Key responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and execution of the Student Affairs strategy to ensure the realization of the Academy’s vision.
  • Develop, execute and monitor the day-to-day implementation of the Boarding strategy.
  • Contribute to address future operational needs and strategies as an integral component of the institutional planning process.
  • Contribute to the development and periodic review of policies and procedures and ensure legislative and organizational compliance and monitor implementation and adherence.
  • To facilitate the leadership program at OWLAG beyond Residences.
  • Develop and ensure the implementation of a consistent, efficient and effective Residence life programme system across all residences.
  • Coordinate the annual service evaluation process and provide feedback to the Dean of Students.
  • Co-ordinate survey analysis and appropriate action planning process with all Boarding House stakeholders, for implementation.
  • Appoint learners to leadership roles, including food committee, residential representatives and ensure these roles are carried out effectively and records kept by offering formal training programs where necessary.
  • Have regular interactions with all borders to ensure their needs, ideas and concerns are heard, understood and addressed
  • In collaboration with the Finance Department and the Dean of Students, prepare and compile annual departmental budget and quarterly forecasts.
  • Track expenses against budgets to ensure over expenditure is minimized.
  • Continually scrutinize expenditure with a view of waste elimination and realisation of savings.
  • Offer leadership, guidance and support to the Matron, Assistant Matron House Mistress and Resident Interns so they feel valued and believe in the genuine importance of their role.
  • Supervision of Residence staff and ensure adherence to HR Policies.
