O'Scions
Our Young Shoots are Now in Bloom.
Few could have predicted the accuracy of the choice of the Class of 2022 when naming themselves the O’Scions. Their name, meaning a slip of a plant ready for grafting and regrowth, has become even more significant as demonstrated by their success. The O’Scions recognised their proudly African heritage and how their growth is dependent on their ancestry. They are the future of South Africa with their feet proudly planted in their ancestry. They would not have realised the symbolism in terms of education when choosing their name either.
The blended model of teaching and learning that took them through a significant portion of their high school career was also indicative of new growth in the teaching space – based on the foundations of traditional education. They have truly represented themselves as future leaders based firmly in Africa and ready to grow strongly in the new world created by, and through, the pandemic.
It gives me great pleasure to share the results of the Class of 2022, the O’Scions. We are extremely excited and proud to announce that the O’Scions have achieved a 100% Pass and a 100% Bachelor’s Degree Pass rate. This means that the entire cohort of the Class of 2022 can enroll for degree studies at University.
When the school was established in 2007, it had a very special mission. The wish of our Founder, Ms Winfrey, was to create a nurturing environment for academically talented girls, whose families are furthest from opportunity, to learn and thrive. In South Africa this means girls who have never had access to quality basic services, including health and quality education.
Her mission was, and still is, for the school to support the girls to be the best that they can be and to lead with integrity, honour and pride.
It is therefore very gratifying to see that we continue to realise this dream.
We are especially proud of the O’Scions because they overcame the impact of COVID and two years of online learning and still managed to achieve these outstanding results. This class entered their Further Education and Training phase during the lockdown and online learning years. These results are a true reflection of the Portrait of an OWLAG Girl. OWLAG girls are resilient, purpose-driven, successful, self leading (see the rest of the qualities below).
An Owlag Girl
When the O’Scions chose the phoenix as their Grade symbol, it was clear that they were sending an important message. For them, this symbol signifies that they have been through immense adversity, but have remained resilient and steadfast. They faced their obstacles with renewed strength and thus, they can truly be regarded as REMARKABLE.
Indeed, the O’Scions are descendants of a notable OWLAG Tribe.
To the O’Scions, today, the entire OWLAG Community, honours your hard work, courage, resilience and drive.

Our gratitude goes to all of the staff members at OWLAG for always putting the girl at the centre. Specifically, a special thank you to:
- Our teachers (all the Grades) for giving so much of yourselves in order for the girls to succeed.
- Our wellness team, social workers and nurses for removing the barriers that inhibit our girls from achieving and to the residence moms for ensuring that our girls feel like they are at home.
- Our support team (administration, IT, Facilities, kitchen staff, HR, cleaners and security) for ensuring that the environment is conducive for learning and teaching.
- EXCO and the Board for leading from the front, the sides and behind. Your support is appreciated
Our profound gratitude goes to our Founder, Ms Winfrey, for giving us the opportunity to nurture these young diamonds. Thank you for the gift that you continue to give to South Africa. We will continue to pay you back by producing all rounded, inspired, inspiring young leaders who are ready to tackle the world.
