O'Icons with outstanding results & distinctions
In 2021, Seventy-One (71) OWLAG students wrote the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) National Senior Certificate examinations and achieved 189 distinctions in total. There were also 175 B symbol achievements, which are in the 70% range.

Highlights include
71 Candidates wrote all their subjects and all of them (100%) achieved a Bachelor’s Degree pass.
71 students wrote 498 examination papers among them and achieved the following outstanding results:
- One hundred and eighty-nine (189) “Outstanding Achievements” (Level 7/distinctions/80 %+) i.e. 38% of subjects written resulted in Level 7 achievements – Distinctions.
- One hundred and seventy-five (175) “Meritorious Achievements” (Level 6/70 – 79%) i.e. 35% of subjects written resulted in Level 6 achievements.
- Eighty-five (85) “Substantial Achievements” (Level 5/60 – 69%) i.e. 17% of subjects resulted in Level 5 achievements.
- Four hundred and ninety-eight (498),e. (90%) of all the examination papers written produced results above 60%.
- Sixty-eight (68) out of Seventy-one (71) students achieved a distinction in one (1) or more subjects.
In addition, OWLAG achieved higher than the national IEB averages in fifteen (15) out of the seventeen (17) subjects (excluding Life Orientation).
It is extremely pleasing to note that the O’Icons have continued the OWLAG trend of shifting our average results away from Levels 1-4 and towards Levels 5-7, on average. This claim is based on the data which reveals that 6 subjects achieved averages of 80% and more in 2021, whereas only 4 subjects had averages in this range in 2020. The knock-on effect of this improvement extends into the ‘B’ and ‘C’ average range. Even more notably, the percentage of candidates in levels 1-4 is no longer significantly concerning.
Details of the OWLAG Outstanding Achievements are as follows:
- Fifteen (15) out of Seventeen (17) subjects (excluding Life Orientation) achieved averages above the national IEB average.
- Six (6) subjects achieved an average of 80% or above
- Five (5) subjects achieved an average of 70% or above
- Five (5) subjects achieved an average of 60% or above
We are also extremely proud of the performance of our students in the subjects listed below as they exceeded the overall national averages substantially:
- Afrikaans First Additional Language exceeded the national average by 05%;
- IsiZulu First Additional Language exceed the national average by 68%;
- Business Studies exceeded the national average by 94%;
- Mathematical Literacy exceed the national average by 95%;
- Visual Arts exceed the national average by 68% and
- Computer Applications Technology exceed the national average by 14%.
IEB National Statistics:
12 857 full time candidates representing 237 schools wrote the 2021 IEB NSC Examination. 89.2% of the cohort achieved a Bachelor’s Degree pass.

No quote captures the story of the achievements of the Class of 2021, the O’Icons, better than this quote from our Founder, Ms. Winfrey. This Class has felt the full brunt of COVID 19 and all its variants. They endured lockdowns, interrupted learning, dual learning and every conceivable challenge posed by online learning. They refused to crumble. When faced by challenges, they found their new centre of gravity and found a new way to stand.
We, at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) are extremely proud to announce that, once again, we have achieved a 100% Pass and a 100% Bachelor’s Degree Pass rate. This means that the entire cohort of the Class of 2021, the O’Icons can enroll for degree studies at University. In addition, two of our girls received seven (7) distinctions each.

The O’Icons have, during this challenging time, displayed quite a number of these virtues, namely, grit, resilience, courage, perseverance, self-leadership and being purpose-driven. They truly are Icons.
Today, as the entire OWLAG Community, we celebrate these Icons. We honour their courage and grit and we celebrate their success. Most of all, we continue to learn from them and find our new ways to stand.

In Conclusion
Congratulations to the O’Icons. We are extremely proud of your achievements. You truly are examples of what being an OWLAG Girl is. You are tenacious, courageous, resilient and all sorts of smart. We wish you well as you enter the next phase of your life. Our hope and wish is that we have contributed towards making you the best you can be and that we have provided you with the tools to keep shining.
A special word of gratitude goes to our OWLAG Tribe (Founder, Board, Teachers, Psychologists, Res Moms, Social Workers, Nurses, Cleaners, Security, IT, Finance, HR, Admin, University Support, Facilities, Catering Staff, Library staff and EXCO) for helping shape these young women. Every one of you has made a significant contribution to their lives.
