Organizational Description

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (The Academy) is a world-class educational platform for girls which is aimed at nurturing a new generation of dynamic women leaders. This residential boarding school is situated in Meyerton, Gauteng Province with just over 300 students enrolled in Grades 8 -12. Grade 12. Students write the Independent Examination Board (I.E.B.) NSC Examination.

Job Purpose

The Residence Matron is expected to provide high quality pastoral care to students and to take pride and ownership for the good running and presentation of the allocated residence. In collaboration with the Head of Boarding, the incumbent must play a parental figure to the learners and serve as an excellent role model to the subordinates in the residence. The Matron must help establish a healthy living environment that provides learners a “home away from home’ and work in collaboration with the Head of Boarding to ensure the proper functioning of each house, maintaining all daily routines and procedures. Depending on the issue at hand, the successful candidate must be able to work with other colleagues within the Academy such as the Psychologists, Social Workers, Nurses, Catering, Academics, Administration, Facilities Management and Extramural & Sports Coordinators. Must be able to engage with learners and their parents in Residence issues collaborating with the Head of Boarding and the Dean of Students. Because of the nature of this position, the successful incumbent will be required to work shifts; and live on the Academy promises while on Academy duties.

Minimum academic requirements & experience

Minimum requirements:

  • A relevant diploma or degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant experience of which one year should be gained from a similar environment.
  • Proven Child & Youth Care experience.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and enforce etiquette standards, code of conduct, dress code and other relevant policies, procedures and standards.
  • Responsible for the homecare of each learner and for providing a nurturing environment.
  • Monitor learners’ appearance and ensure that the dress code is in alignment with the Academy’s brand standards.
  • Provide discipline oversight and support boarding staff in monitoring learners in alignment with expected standards.
  • Liaise with the Assistant Matron, House Mistress, Interns and Academic professional services, as necessary, to ensure that learners are provided with support as required.
  • Coordinate and ensure adherence to the Boarding House roster and activities.
  • Coordinate and write reports as required by the Head of Boarding.
  • Ensure appropriate cover and full relief in the event of staff absence.
  • Understand and implement the fire drill procedures in the Boarding House.
  • Staff supervision.
  • Ability to teach/model life skills required to be functional at the Residence.
